A farm kid who dressed 'ugly',
I was awkward, and didn't fit in:
Shy, ashamed, and uncomfortable...
Bony frame showing through skin.
Boarding the morning school bus,
Trying to find a place to sit down;
Meeting the eyes of someone with space,
Only to be met with a frown.
Except for one high school girl,
Who was always sweet and kind;
She would usually make room for me,
And never seemed to mind.
She would be warm and friendly,
And engage me in light chit-chat...
A true Christian, if ever there was one,
And I will forever love her for that.
She graduated, and went off to college;
Hitchhiked home for Christmas the first year.
At the hands of two strangers, she met
The cruel fate every parent must fear.
The remains were found months later:
Identified by the dental records.
The loss of a bright life, just nineteen,
Is a pain that goes beyond words.
Nearly forty years have passed,
But her memory remains clear to me:
The shining example she set, helped
To shape the person I would be.
