On a warm, summer evening
Peace was shattered by a shout:
Half a dozen just-weaned kittens
Had gone on 'walkabout'.
They had been born in a van
Parked just across the street;
Occupied by a homeless couple,
Who stayed there most of the week.
They disappeared every weekend,
But this time the kittens stayed;
Left in the yard of a friend,
So they knew it was time they strayed.
Somehow, it was our home
That lured them all in;
Perhaps drawn by the scent
Of contented cats within.
We chased them all over...
Those little partners in crime,
With the neighbor kids helping,
And having a whale of a time.
One small, gray, feminine,
Pretty bundle of fur
Came to me for petting;
And sweetly she did purr.
Most ran back across the street,
But the female wanted to stay;
I know she was hoping for a home...
I took her back over, anyway!
(Three cats is already three too many!)
